Message from the President

My warmest greetings to the Department of Education (DepEd) Region VI as it hosts the 2017 Palarong Pambansa.

For more than six decades, young athletes from all walks of life gather in the spirit of sportsmanship for the Palarong Pambansa.  I commend the organizers for making this yearly meet the stage where the youth could showcase their skills and talent through competitive sports. By tapping on their potentials, we give the participants courage to take on bigger opportunities later in life.

This event is an affirmation of the vital role of the youth in building a sustainable future. They are our valuable partners in cultivating a strong society as they demonstrate their skills and talent in the area of sports.

May this occasion inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie and unity among the athletes. I trust that DepEd will use this activity to promote physical education as an integral part of our academic curriculum for young individuals. Together, let us work towards building a stronger nation for future generations.

I wish you a successful event.

Message from the Secretary

Greetings to the officials, organizers, coaches and athletes participating in this year’s Palarong Pambansa to be held in San Jose, Antique on April 23-29, 2017 with the theme, “2017 Palarong Pambansa: Converges Youth Power, Builds Sustainable Future.”

This year, the entire nation shall witness thousands of young athletes, armed with physical prowess and mental toughness, competing with each other and against themselves. In the course of their competitions, these young athletes will learn the joy of triumph and the gracious acceptance of defeat. However, more than winning or losing, Palarong Pambansa should be a veritable exhibit of fairness, camaraderie, and sportsmanship that the country will be proud to showcase at international sports events.

This event also poses a challenge to educators. Have we been successful in developing a holistic learner who is capable both inside the classroom and out in the playing field?

The Palaro will serve as our marker: Are we really making a difference in the lives of our learners? More than just providing sporting opportunities, are we able to sew into the fabric of our schools the culture of excellence?

Let this sports event become a legacy for the next generation of Filipino athletes. Let us join hands in ensuring that quality and equality, inclusion and inspiration, become the Palaro’s benchmark.

Do your best and congratulations!

Antique all geared up to host Palaro in San Jose de Buenavista

ANTIQUE is ready to host the Palarong Pambansa for the first time this summer.

This was declared by Governor Rhodora Cadiao after she signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones for the hosting rights of the annual multisport event at the DepEd offices in Pasig City on Thursday.

“The province is around 90 to 95 percent ready to host the 18 participating regions in the April 23 to 29 games,” Cadiao told reporters during the press conference that followed the MOA signing ceremony.

Antique is hosting the Palaro for the Visayas region for the first time. The province has refurbished the Binirayan Sports Complex in San Jose de Buenavista that will serve as the main hub of the games.

“We renovated the sports complex to international standards for the Palaro,” Cadiao said.

Expenses for hosting the Palaro were not solely shouldered by Antique. The DepEd put in its annual earmarked budget for the hosts of P34 million while the Philippine Sports Commission released P10 million on top of world-standard equipment.

Antique, according to Cadiao, has spent P40 million for the games.

“We really waited for this kind of event to happen in our province,”  Cadiao said. “It can be recalled that our President [Duterte] wants to bring progress to the countryside, and now all the roads will lead to Antique. We will welcome all the participants with our best efforts.”

The DepEd also announced on Thursday that wushu, wrestling, billiards and futsal are now regular sports on the Palaro program.
